(Please note that individual grantees who are residents of the United States and whose approved grants are not affiliated with nonprofit organizations will be issued 1099s for tax purposes.)

• Universities and colleges

• State, provincial, and local government offices

• Non-profit, non-academic organizations with governmental determination of non-profit status, e.g. public interest groups, associations, policy study groups, or think tanks

When to Submit Preliminary Grant Applications

The Foundation Research Grants Program operates on an annual schedule. Preliminary Grant Applications must be submitted between January 1 and April 30 of the year in which grant funding is sought.

How to Submit Preliminary Grant Applications

Preliminary Grant Applications are accepted only via this website. All fields of the Preliminary Grant Application that are marked with an asterisk must be filled in. Immediately after successful submission, applicants will receive online acknowledgment of our receipt of their Preliminary Grant Applications.

What Happens Next

When the Preliminary Grant Application enters processing, the applicant will receive automatic email notification that the application is in review. All applicants will be notified no later than June 1 regarding eligibility to proceed to the next step. If the Preliminary Grant Application is rejected, the applicant will be notified by email. If the Preliminary Grant Application is accepted, the applicant will be invited to prepare and submit a Formal Proposal.

Decisions regarding acceptance and rejection of Preliminary Grant Applications are final. In view of the large numbers of applicants, detailed explanations for rejections will not be given.
