Kristie L. Ebi
Dr. Kristie L. Ebi is an independent consultant (ESS, LLC) based in Alexandria, VA, who has been conducting research on the impacts of and adaptation to climate change for more than a decade, primarily on extreme events, thermal stress, foodborne diseases, and vectorborne diseases. She worked for the World Health Organization from 2001/2 and in 2007.
Dr. Ebi is working or has worked with WHO, International Development Research Centre, United Nations Development Programme, US Agency for International Development, and others on designing, implementing, and monitoring adaptation measures in eighteen low-income countries. She calculated the costs of adaptation to climate change-related cases of diarrheal diseases, malnutrition, and malaria in the year 2030 for the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. She is working with Health Canada and WHO on writing guidelines for conducting adaptation assessments by Ministries of Health in low- and middle-income countries. She worked with Environmental Defense Fund to survey public health officials on current and proposed activities to adapt to climate change. She is working with the Center for Climate Strategies on identifying adaptation options for states conducting vulnerability and adaptation assessments. She also is working with Stratus Consulting to design a model (software tool) of the health impacts of climate change under contracts with US Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
She was a Lead Author for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (the Human Health chapter); US Synthesis and Assessment Product, “Analyses of the Effects of Global Change on Human Health and Welfare and Human Systems” (Human Health section); International Assessment of Agriculture Science and Technology for Development (Synthesis Report for Decision-makers and Chapter on Options to Enhance the Impact of AKST on Development and Sustainability Goals); and The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (Working Group II Response Options, Chapters on Human Health and on Uncertainties in Assessing the Effectiveness of Response Options Regarding Ecosystem Services, and the Business and Industry Synthesis Report). She has edited four books on climate change and has more than 75 publications.
Dr. Ebi’s scientific training includes an M.S. in toxicology and a Ph.D. and MPH in epidemiology, and two years of postgraduate research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
