Six leaders in science, social science, and academia were invited to present differing perspectives on the question of “How Evolution Works.” Each presented a paper and then fielded questions from the group. Round-table discussions following each presentation provided a means of synthesizing the wide-ranging material. Finally, the workshop scholars addressed critical question themes developed by the Foundation: (1) Are humans, by virtue of evolution, inherently “moral” absolutely? (2) Is evolution primarily and singularly an active force of competition among organisms for reproductive success, with all other systems being by-products, or is evolution competition for resources among organisms within a set of complex systems, with the winner’s reproductive success? (3) Can we look before we leap?
