“The Future: Young Scholars’ Inquiry” Pilot Seminar

Summary
 The Foundation For the Future
conducted a pilot seminar entitled “The Future: Young Scholars’ Inquiry” as part of its Education and Outreach Program on June 9, 2005. Twenty-seven “highly capable” fifth-grade students from the PRISM program at Stevenson Elementary School, Bellevue, WA, presented and discussed research regarding the long-term future of humanity.
The
pilot seminar followed the format of the Foundation’s popular Humanity 3000 seminars and included plenary sessions, breakout groups, and fishbowl sessions focused on the factors that are expected to be critical to humankind’s long-term future. The young scholars chose education, environment, and food/hunger/poverty as the three most important issues going forward into the future.
The
purpose of the pilot seminar was to create a replicable and scalable model to be implemented at all levels in educational institutions locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally over time, for engaging students in thoughtful consideration of the critical questions that will have an impact on the future of humanity.

Participants
The students who took part in the pilot seminar were enrolled in the PRISM program at Stevenson Elementary School, Bellevue, WA, taught by Paula Fraser. In the two months leading up to the pilot, they were not only engaged in designing the program, but also chose topics for individual research, identified and invited experts to speak to the class, and completed interviews in the community related to the seminar subjects. Principal associates involved in developing the seminar were PRISM teacher Paula Fraser and Richard T. Henry, President of UnifiedField Associates.
