Kistler Lecture Series • October 2010 “Managing the Future” • Talk by Sesh Velamoor • July 2010	Programs Education and Outreach HOME \| TALKS \| SEMINARS \| SCIENCE TEACHER WORKSHOP \| RESEARCH LIBRARY “Young Scholars’ Inquiry” Seminar 2 February 16, 2006 \| Foundation For the Future Building, Bellevue, Washington Summary Following the format established in the June 2005 “Young Scholars’ Inquiry” pilot seminar, the Foundation For the Future hosted twenty-five 10- and 11-year-old students on February 16, 2006, for an all-day seminar addressing humanity’s long-term future. The students came prepared with PowerPoint presentations resulting from many weeks of research into specific future-oriented topics. This year, they worked jointly so that two or three students presented research on a single topic, and those topics ranged broadly from global economics to biodiversity, overpopulation, energy, clean water, etc. At the conclusion of the presentations, the young scholars broke into four small groups for conversations focused on the most critical factors facing humanity. Ultimately, environment, education, and overpopulation were identified by these seminar participants as the three most important issues going forward into the future. As the students addressed these issues in three "fishbowl" dialogues, they came to see interconnections among the issues and how solutions for one can impact solutions for others. A reception at the Foundation on the evening of February 15 gave the students a chance to meet Foundation staff for the first time, and gave their parents an opportunity to ask questions about what the daylong seminar would mean for their children. Additional “Young Scholars’ Inquiry” seminars – this time for middle school and high school students – are in planning for June 2006. Participants The students who took part in Seminar 2 were enrolled in the PRISM program at Stevenson Elementary School, Bellevue, WA, taught by Paula Fraser.
