“Future of Humanity: Seminar 2”
Convened September 25–29, 1999 | Sleeping Lady Resort, Leavenworth, Washington
Summary
Humanity 3000 Seminar 2 brought together 27 scholars who worked in both small groups and plenary discussions. Each of the five small groups tackled two issues: “Problems Threatening Humanity's Survival through the Year 3000” and “Opportunities that Mitigate the Threats to Humanity's Long-Term Survival.” Growing out of these discussions were topics considered “Emergent Priorities for Humanity to Ensure Survival through the Year 3000.” These topics were then addressed in three fishbowl conversations focused on (1) the future role of science and of technology, (2) evolution and conscious evolution, and (3) questions of human ignorance and the nation-state.
The seminar concluded with explorations of plausible long-term futures. Each participant was asked to describe his or her own life in the year 3000, then look back towards the year 2000 and answer questions about events over the intervening millennium.
