Seminar 3

Convened August 12–14, 2001 | Mayflower Park Hotel, Seattle, Washington

Summary

Twenty-five participants gathered for Seminar 3. Divided into five small groups, these scholars addressed the issues: (1) What will we know/apply? (2) Challenges for governance (3) The future of cultural/religious/economic systems (4) Is sustainability an issue? and (5) Wild cards to keep in mind. Two fishbowl discussions were convened: one on “Man and superman” and the other, “Conscious evolution – fantasy or fact?”

The seminar concluded with a formal debate on the resolution: “The geologic record indicates that few species survive more than several million years: Homo sapiens’ time is up!” The resolution was defeated by a comfortable majority.

Proceedings (9.6 MB PDF) of this seminar, including transcripts of all dialogic sessions, available for download. Featured is an interview of Richard Dawkins and Norman Levitt conducted by Sesh Velamoor, Deputy Director, Programs, Foundation For the Future.
